AnkiMaster — Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 10, 2026
1. Overview
AnkiMaster ("the Extension") is a Chrome browser extension that helps you create Anki flashcards from web content. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data the Extension accesses, how it is used, and with whom (if anyone) it is shared.
2. Data We Collect and How We Use It
2a. Data stored locally on your device
- Anki note template — the template name and field names you select are stored in
chrome.storage.local so the Extension remembers your last choice between sessions.
- Extension settings — your default deck, OpenRouter API key, AI model selection, and language preference are stored in
chrome.storage.local on your device only. They are never transmitted to our servers.
- Draft card content — text you type and screenshots you capture are temporarily stored in
chrome.storage.session (cleared when you close the browser).
2b. Data transmitted to third-party services
- AnkiConnect (localhost only) — the Extension communicates with the AnkiConnect add-on running on your local machine at
http://127.0.0.1:8765. This traffic never leaves your device.
- OpenRouter AI (optional) — if you choose to use the AI auto-fill feature, the text you enter in the Prompt field is sent to OpenRouter using your own API key. This feature is entirely opt-in and only triggered by an explicit button press. No data is sent automatically. Please review OpenRouter's Privacy Policy for how they handle this data.
3. Data We Do Not Collect
- We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal information to our own servers.
- We do not track browsing history or page content beyond what you explicitly select to add to a flashcard.
- We do not use analytics, telemetry, or crash-reporting services.
- We do not sell, rent, or share any data with third parties for advertising purposes.
4. Permissions Explained
- storage — to save your settings and draft card content locally.
- activeTab — to inject the screenshot-selection overlay into the currently active tab when you press the Screenshot button.
- scripting — to programmatically inject the screenshot overlay script into a page.
- tabs — to identify the active tab when capturing a screenshot.
- contextMenus — to add a right-click menu item "Create flashcard with AnkiMaster" when you select text on a page.
- sidePanel — to display the Extension's UI as a persistent Chrome side panel.
- Host permission <all_urls> — the screenshot feature must be able to inject the selection overlay into any webpage the user is viewing. This permission is required because the user may want to capture content from any site.
5. Children's Privacy
AnkiMaster is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
6. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Continued use of the Extension after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
